Ventures / Overview

Ventures.

Most venture investors offer money. Some offer mentorship. A few offer a team. Sprout Ventures offers what founders in Southeast Asia actually run out of first: the product-engineering capacity to build the thing, not just to pitch it. We co-build with founders who have the domain, we embed as technical cofounders when founders have the vision but not the team, and we invest alongside partners on a thesis focused on vertical AI, UMKM Southeast Asia, and the emerging-market operators who can't wait three years for a Series A.

Product-engineering-native venture building

The venture studio model is now 1.9x more common than the accelerator model globally, a signal that the market is moving from "cheque + mentorship" toward "cheque + team + shipped product." In Southeast Asia, most of the well-known venture operators are VC-led, with operational support as a secondary offering. Sprout Ventures inverts that: the product team is the core offering, and the capital relationship wraps around it. We operate in three modes: co-build with domain founders, embed as technical cofounder when founders need a build partner first, and partner with Wright Partners on its portfolio as a product-engineering and AI-implementation capability layer.

The venture-studio ladder

A horizontal flow showing the typical path from idea to scale, with Sprout Ventures' three modes mapped against lifecycle stages. Co-build at prototype, technical cofounder at early scale, Wright Partners alliance at portfolio level, all sitting on a thesis band of vertical AI, UMKM Southeast Asia, and regulated-sector digital transformation. How we build ventures that ship, not just pitch

Four principles that separate product-engineering-native venture building from the kind where the pitch deck ships before the product does.

01

Thesis-first engagement

We engage where we have a thesis: vertical AI in SEA emerging markets, UMKM digital infrastructure, regulated-sector product opportunities. Founders outside our thesis get an honest no and a referral to operators who fit. Within thesis, we engage deeply.

02

Product before pitch

A Sprout-built MVP in a founder's hands beats a better deck in a competing founder's hands. We scope for shipped product as the first milestone, not a raised round. Cap tables, term sheets, governance, those follow validation, not precede it.

03

Clear equity + cash economics up front

Co-build engagements trade some cash with some equity; technical-cofounder engagements vary. We document the mix in writing before we start. The alignment of incentive should be legible to a reasonable third party looking at our agreement on day one.

04

Graduate the founder's team

Our job ends when the venture has its own engineering org. We transition from primary builder to advisor to augmented-team partner. And eventually, we're redundant. That's the point. Ventures that hand off cleanly to their own teams are the ones that actually compound.

Three programs

Three entry points, one continuous relationship across a venture's life.

Co-Build

Sprout product team + founder build an MVP or v1 product together. Founder owns domain, strategy, market. Sprout brings product, design, engineering, QA, DevOps: the full product-engineering stack. Engagement typically 3–6 months to first production launch, with continued partnership as the venture scales.

Technical Cofounder

For founders with a vision and a market, but no technical team yet. Sprout embeds fractional or dedicated engineering leadership, Head of Engineering, VP Eng, CTO-equivalent, while the venture builds its own in-house team. Shorter and wider than co-build; focused on leadership, architecture, and first production.

Wright Partners

Sprout is the product-engineering and AI-implementation capability across Wright Partners' venture portfolio. Wright Partners is an independent SEA venture studio with its own thesis, team, and portfolio; Sprout operates as its technology partner for portfolio companies that need deep product-engineering capacity.

SPROUT WORK

A 0% commission marketplace that onboarded 150k+ sellers in 3 weeks

We co-built the product behind an Indonesian UMKM marketplace that operates on a zero-commission model, onboarding more than 150,000 sellers in its first three weeks of public launch (June 2025). Built for micro- and small-business sellers with mobile-first workflows and WhatsApp integration.

Tech4Good silver: AI agronomy at smallholder scale

Sprout-built vision and extraction models behind a smallholder agronomy platform. Farmer-submitted photos turned into field-specific agronomy guidance delivered over WhatsApp in Bahasa and regional languages. The platform took silver at the 2025 Salesforce Tech4Good Awards for Best Use of AI in Agriculture and Food Security.

Venture studios are the fastest-growing corner of VC

Venture studios are now 1.9x more common than accelerators among newly launched VC funds (2024), reflecting a global shift from "capital only" to "capital + team + shipped product." Southeast Asia's leading early-stage operators are rebuilding around this model. For founders, the calculation has changed. The firms that bring real product-engineering depth are winning disproportionate founder mindshare.

Building something that needs more than capital?

Tell us what you're building: a venture idea looking for a co-build partner, an early-stage company looking for technical cofounder depth, a founder who's raised but can't find the team. We'll look at fit honestly, tell you where we can and can't help, and when we engage, we engage on both sides of the cap table. Worst case, an honest no and a referral. Best case, a product-engineering partner from day zero.
